Just 25 minutes south of Towson University, Baltimore’s Inner Harbor offers a refreshing blend of calm waterfront scenery and busy city energy, an easy escape for students who crave the best of both worlds.
The Inner Harbor, located at 201 E. Pratt St., is a walkable waterfront scape where cobblestone pathways will guide you along the scenic waters lined with happy tourists, beautiful sailboats floating along the harbor, and public art plastering the scenery. It’s a place where you can grab coffee by the docks and unwind from the stress of being a college student.

Dive in by the Water
I like to start my visit at the benches outside of the Four Seasons Hotel (Four Seasons Hotel Baltimore, 200 International Drive, 410-576-5800), one of my favorite spots in the city. From the benches along the water you can see so much of Baltimore’s skyline while enjoying the sound of the tide splashing along the docks, a soothing and grounding experience.
When taking the cobblestone path following three walkable bridges you will find yourself at one of Baltimore’s most appreciated attractions, The National Aquarium (501 E. Pratt St.; 410-576-3800). Inside you can find beautiful sharks gliding through clear waters and tropical birds swooping overhead in the rainforest exhibit, an all-senses experience that is soothing, educating, and inspiring all at once.

Fuel Up!
If you start to feel hungry you are in the right spot! With many options to choose from along the harbor there are many places worth trying, Phillips Seafood (601 E. Pratt St.; 410-685-6600) serves up the freshest Maryland crab cakes that you can get with a waterfront view of the harbor. For something lighter, Miss Shirley’s Cafe (750 E. Pratt St.; 410-528-5373) is a brunch favorite known for its cinnamon roll pancakes and crab benedict. Serving fun morning mocktails and a wide range of healthy menu items, Miss Shirley’s Cafe is a one size fits all kind of place.
Get Active!
If you’re looking to stretch your legs and get your endorphins flowing, rent a scooter or take a walk along the Harbor Promenade, which stretches from Federal Hill Park to Fells Point. Federal Hill (300 Warren Ave.) is a must see if visiting the inner harbor. A short climb of the grassy slope will deliver you to one of the best skyline views in Baltimore, and if you’re lucky enough you can find it at sunset for the most connected experience.
Students who enjoy art and culture are in luck in Baltimore City! You can visit the American Visionary Art Museum (800 Key Highway; 410-244-1900), where the colorful, quirky exhibits directly reflect the creative and fiery energy that this city never fails to express..

Getting There
The Inner Harbor is accessible by car via I-83 and through different forms of public transportation. Parking is available at the Harbor Park Garage (55 Market Place; 410-234-3631). Many students don’t realize it is just a 25 minute drive from campus!
It’s More than just a Day Trip
What makes the Inner Harbor stand out for Towson students? Its dual identity! It is peaceful enough for studying by the water, yet lively enough for a weekend trip with some friends. It is a nice reconnect with nature and all of its elements after a long week of studying, a great place to go during finals week to give yourself a reminder to slow down and breathe. No matter the reason for visiting, the harbor offers it all, each experience connects you to both nature and Baltimore’s vibrant city life.So when campus life feels overwhelming, take the short trip south. The harbor is waiting to heal, connect, and bring back that lively spirit in you.
