A Day at the BMA

A Day in History: Baltimore Museum of Art

By: Da’Jha Winters

. The Baltimore Museum of Art, established in 1914 as one of the oldest establishments in Baltimore, welcomes art and artifacts from around the world. BMA offers a variety of exhibitions dedicated to modern and historical collections.

Just last week my boyfriend and I had the chance to visit this local treasure. It was a bit cloudy and light rain which meant not so many people. That actually helped us find parking close by. If you’re a driver, the museum offers close parking on the side of the building and there is curb parking in the front (free on certain days). BMA is free but be sure to reserve tickets to be able to get in; special viewings are an additional charge.

BMA has a variety of artifacts donated to the museum from around the world. One of the artifacts that left an impact on me was the Water-Moon Guanyin, also known as “ Shuiyue Guanyin”. This beautiful statue was created in 15th century China. It is one of many objects from Asia.

Another area of the BMA features the artist, Henri Matisse. His artwork was absolutely beautiful to see up close.

I dibble dabble in paint myself so seeing his paint style and way he captures the scenery that surrounds his muse has gained him a new follower.

After touring the Matisse exhibition, we went to check out the European art room. If you’re a Bridgerton fan you may find some real paintings of Queen Charlotte and her children. Recently I introduced my boyfriend to the series so he was quite surprised to see that a character in the show is actually inspired by the real queen.

After doing our world tour, we took a break in the family area where they offer historical games played around the world. My boyfriend and I went with chess (I won of course!) but after playing we got to check out another board game that reminded of the game “Sorry”, it made me think about how people still are the same in some ways, especially when it comes to discovering a form of entertainment to pass time.

Exploring all the parts of the museum that was allowed and that lengthy game of chess, we spent about two to three hours there. The museum also offers a gift shop and a restaurant which are great places to debrief your visit!

Overall, the Baltimore Museum of Art offers many exhibitions with artifacts from around the world and interactive activities to explore. If you’re ever in the area or a local with no plans for the day, check out the art museum and take a pic with the big ole green frog guy made by artist, Raul de Nieves. Nieves’s artwork is displayed through the east lobby of the museum until December 31, 2026.
