As an out-of-state student, I’m often searching for new things to do and see in the area without burning a hole in my pockets. My boyfriend, Dylan, and I decided to find affordable spots to visit in the city. We took the hour-and-a-half drive down to D.C. and started our day at the Washington Monument.
We found a great parking place for just $7 across the street stood the towering Washington Monument. Seeing it in person was completely different than in pictures. It is surrounded by fields of green open to the public to sunbathe, picnic, and enjoy the warm weather..
The Jefferson Memorial
Next, we visited the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. As a history nerd, I loved reading all the quotes on the wall. The Thomas Jefferson Memorial provided shade from the sun as well as tall steps that were fairly quiet and empty. It’s a beautiful space to sit, relax, and learn a little about our country’s history.
After viewing the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, we decided to make our way into the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial. The memorial, unlike the rest in Washington, D.C., was a walk through filled with a plethora of history, quotes, and facts about Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was an open space where tourists could walk through and take in the sights. The memorial had numerous waterfalls, park benches, and statues of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.
For our final stop, we visited the Lincoln Memorial. Surprisingly, it was my first time seeing it in person, and I can confidently say- I understand the hype. The memorial is breathtaking with its 36 columns made of white marble and limestone. It was impactful to see so much of American history in one place. The memorial was hands down the busiest spot of the afternoon, but it’s so worth it. Like the Jefferson Memorial, it provides tourists with a cool spot to relax on the steps, take photos, and get a little insight into Lincoln’s impact on America.
Washington D.C. Is an amazing place to get away from dorm life for an afternoon. Whether it’s stopping at all the local tourist attractions, or taking a day of relaxing on the green, the city provides an array of activities that can provide a reset day.
